What to Ask During a College Accepted Students Day Visit

You’ve received the acceptance, and now you’re invited to join with other accepted students to visit the campus. The accepted student day is a great way to help you learn more about the school, your intended major, meet potential classmates, and determine if it’s the right fit for you to enroll. If possible, we recommend attending as many of these events as you can for the schools you are considering, even if you’ve toured before.  At these events, colleges are trying to sell themselves to you, and you can hear more about the program of study and ask specific questions to help you narrow down your choices. Here are some questions to ask while on these visits to help you make a final decision.

Academic Questions

  • How easy is it to get into classes?
  • What does a typical first-year schedule look like for my major?
  • How easy is it to switch majors?
  • Are classes taught by professors or teaching assistants?
  • What are average class sizes in introductory courses?
  • What kind of undergraduate research opportunities exist?
  • How accessible are professors outside of class?

Why it matters: A school can look amazing on paper, but academic flexibility and faculty support can have an effect on your experience.

Major-Specific Questions

  • What internship opportunities are available for this major?
  • Where have recent graduates gone (jobs or grad schools)?
  • Are there strong alumni networks in this field?

Campus Life

Ask current students these questions:

  • What do students do on weekends?
  • Is campus lively or quiet?
  • How easy is it to make friends?
  • What clubs are most active?
  • Is Greek life dominant?
  • Do most students stay on campus or go home on weekends?

Look around while you ask. Are students engaged? Do they seem happy?

Housing & Dorm Life

  • How many years are students guaranteed housing?
  • What are the dorm/off campus options after freshman year?
  • What is the roommate selection process?

Financial Questions

Before committing, clarify:

  • Is my financial aid package fixed for four years?
  • What is the approximate increase in tuition each year?
  • How easy is it to get on-campus jobs?

If you received merit aid, ask about GPA requirements to keep it.

Career & Internship Support

  • How early can students access career services?
  • What companies recruit here?
  • What percentage of students complete internships?
  • Are internships paid or unpaid?
  • Does the school help students find internships in major cities?

Support Services

  • What academic support is available?
  • Is tutoring free?
  • How accessible are mental health services?
  • What does advising look like for first-year students?

Student Questions

  • What’s something students complain about the most?
  • If you could change one thing about this school, what would it be?
  • Why did you personally choose this school?
  • What is your favorite thing about the school?

Final Advice: Trust the Vibe

Another reason to attend an accepted student day is to make sure the vibe fits.

Walk around on your own. Sit in the dining hall. Talk to random students. Imagine yourself there on a Tuesday in December — not just on a (hopefully) sunny admitted-student event day.

The right school isn’t just the one that accepted you.  It’s the one where you feel a connection and can see yourself there the next four years.
